Fast help when your heating gives up

A breakdown rarely picks a convenient moment. It tends to arrive on the coldest morning, with the house full, or right as the weekend starts. When there is no heat and no hot water, the last thing you want is to be left guessing. Our Gas Safe registered team covers urgent heating and boiler call-outs right across Newcastle Upon Tyne, and we work to get your home warm and running again as quickly as we safely can.

Being Gas Safe registered means our engineers are on the official list of people allowed to work on gas appliances in the UK. For you, that is the reassurance that an urgent repair is done properly and safely, not patched up to get us out of the door.

The heating emergencies we deal with

Most of the urgent jobs we attend fall into a handful of familiar groups. Get in touch straight away if you are dealing with any of these:

  • No heating at all, especially in cold weather or where young children or elderly residents are affected
  • No hot water for washing, bathing or the kitchen
  • A boiler that keeps shutting down or going into lockout (a safety cut-out that stops the boiler firing)
  • A leaking boiler, or water pooling on the floor beneath it
  • Loud banging, gurgling or whistling from the boiler or pipework
  • A pilot light or burner that will not stay lit

Behind these symptoms the cause is often a failed pump, a stuck diverter valve, a broken thermostat, a frozen condensate pipe, low pressure or an ignition fault. Wherever we can, we carry out the repair on the first visit so you are not left waiting in the cold for a return trip.

What counts as a heating emergency, and what can wait

Not every heating problem needs someone there the same day, and it helps to know the difference. A genuine emergency is anything that leaves your home cold or unsafe: no heating in winter, no hot water, a boiler leak, a fault that keeps tripping the electrics, or of course any smell of gas. These need attention quickly.

Other issues are a nuisance rather than a crisis and can usually be booked in as a normal appointment. One lukewarm radiator while the rest of the house is fine, a boiler that is noisier than usual but still working, or a slightly low pressure reading can often wait a day or two without any real risk. If you are not sure which camp your problem falls into, send us the details and we will give you an honest view rather than rushing you into an urgent call-out you do not need.

What to do first if you have no heating or hot water

Before we arrive, a few simple checks sometimes fix the problem, or at least help us know what we are walking into. None of them involve opening up the boiler, so they are safe to try yourself.

  • Check the thermostat. Make sure it is set above room temperature and, if it runs on batteries, that they are not flat.
  • Check the boiler pressure. Most boilers show a pressure gauge or dial. If the needle sits well below 1 bar, low pressure may have shut the boiler down.
  • Check the power and the timer. Confirm the boiler has power, that no fuse or switch has tripped, and that the timer or programmer has not slipped off schedule after a power cut.
  • Try one reset. If the boiler is showing a fault code or lockout light, press the reset button once. If it locks out again, stop there and leave it to us rather than resetting repeatedly.

If none of that brings the heating back, note down any fault code showing on the display and send it to us with your request. It often tells our engineer a great deal before we even arrive.

Think you have a gas leak? Act now

If you smell gas, or suspect a leak or carbon monoxide, treat it as a life-threatening emergency and deal with it before you worry about the appliance. Do not turn any electrical switches on or off, do not light matches or use naked flames, open doors and windows to let fresh air in, and turn the gas off at the meter if it is safe to reach. Then call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 — the free, 24-hour line run by the national gas network. This is the national emergency number, not our business line. Once the supply has been made safe, contact us to repair or replace the appliance.

How fast we can reach you across Newcastle

We put emergency jobs to the front of the queue and aim to get to you as quickly as we can across Newcastle Upon Tyne and the surrounding areas. How soon that is depends on the time of day and how many urgent calls are already in hand, so when you contact us we will give you a realistic idea of timing rather than a promise we cannot keep. Because every engineer on the team is Gas Safe registered, you can trust that whoever attends is qualified to put things right safely.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

We keep this simple and honest. Before anyone attends, we will explain clearly what the visit involves and what it is likely to cost, so there are no awkward surprises once the work is done. Tell us what is happening and we will talk you through the charges up front, then only carry out the repair once you are happy to go ahead.

How to reach us urgently

The quickest way to get hold of us is to send your details through the urgent request form on this page, or email info@heatingengineernewcastle.co.uk. Tell us what is going wrong, your address and any fault code on the display, and we will respond quickly to arrange your call-out. For a suspected gas leak, always ring the National Gas Emergency Service first on the number above.

We respond fast to

  • No heating — a cold home and radiators that will not warm up.
  • No hot water — nothing coming through at the taps.
  • Boiler leaks — water escaping from or beneath the boiler.
  • Breakdowns — boilers that lock out or will not fire up.

Emergency Call-Out FAQs

We put emergency jobs first and aim to reach you as soon as we can across Newcastle Upon Tyne and nearby areas. Send your details through the urgent request form or email us, and we will respond quickly to confirm a realistic time based on how busy the day is.

Have a quick look at the thermostat, the boiler pressure gauge and the power supply, and try a single reset if the boiler is showing a lockout. If that does not bring the heating back, note any fault code on the display and send it to us. It often helps our engineer diagnose the problem before arriving.

No heating or hot water, a leaking boiler, a boiler that keeps shutting down, or any fault that leaves your home cold or unsafe all count as emergencies, especially in winter or where vulnerable people are in the house. A single cold radiator or a slightly noisy boiler can usually wait for a normal appointment. If you are unsure, just ask and we will advise honestly.

Treat it as an emergency. Do not use electrical switches or naked flames, open doors and windows to ventilate, and turn the gas off at the meter if it is safe to do so. Then call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, the free 24-hour line run by the national gas network. Once the supply has been confirmed safe, contact us to repair the appliance.

We are always clear and upfront about charges before we attend, so there are no surprises. Send us your details and a description of the problem and we will explain the costs involved before carrying out any work.

Our engineers work on all the common makes and models of gas boiler found in Newcastle homes. Let us know the make, model and roughly how old the boiler is when you get in touch, and we will make sure we arrive prepared for the most likely fault.
